Abstract
In the past, studies of large scale travelling ionospheric disturbances (LSTIDs) were carried using ground based instruments such as ionosondes. Currently more techniques and data sources exist to comprehensively study these wavelike disturbances on both spatial and temporal scales. We report on the characteristics of LSTIDs obtained using GPS radio interferometry and correlate satellite results with ionosonde measurements over Southern Africa during disturbed conditions. This study showed that the storm induced TIDs were generally propagating equatorward, which is consistent with other studies. For the first time, electron content (which provides information about TIDs) perturbation maps over the African continent will be presented. This presentation will discuss recent results about TID related studies in the African sector, highlight the challenges and suggest methods of addressing the data gaps for accurate ionospheric mapping.
