Abstract
The search for a network design that can preserve service quality in the presence of malice, malfunction, and accident is addressed. The different quality requirements that users may have are outlined. Protocol and network performance studies are discussed. The impact of new technology is considered. Current trends in telecommunications are summarized.<>
