The emergence of a British computer industry is traced during the decade 1945¿55 in this two-part article. Part one deals with the immediate post Second World War years, including the `British national computer¿ the Cambridge EDSAC and the Manchester Mark 1 and 2. Part 2 will deal with the NPL ACE, MOSAIC, TREAC etc. and concurrent US developments
