Efficient use of electricity in motor drives

The Electrical Research Association undertook recently a study to determine the most efficient way of using present-day electric-motor-drive systems. The study will culminate in a report on the selection and application of motor-drive systems that will enable a minimum of first cost and energy cost over the equipment life to be obtained. But how can the use of motor drives be controlled to save energy?
