One of the most common problems with large software packages is that they tend to be badly documented. With hardware products we expect a wide range of documentation from functional descriptions of the equipment to maintenance handbooks and circuit diagrams. Software products have similar needs, but these are rarely satisfied, so that maintenance teams may find themselves trying to support packages which they cannot even understand, let alone maintain
