The CERN 400 GeV proton accelerator

In February 1971, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research´s member countries signed an agreement to build a 300 GeV accelerator and a new experimental area at a cost not exceeding SF1150 million (1970 values). The accelerator first operated in May 1976 and the new North Experimental Area will be in use by spring this year. The project will be completed well within the budget - SF50 million has already been returned to member states.
