Abstract :
Hermann Schmidt (1894-1968) is recognized as a pioneer in control and cybernetics in Germany. His distinctions include the fact that for many years he was the only German professor of control engineering. In 1939, he founded the renowned control group of the VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure, the German association of engineers) known as the Fachgruppe Regelungstechnik. This article reviews his career, his technical and philosophical interests, and his contributions to the development of control engineering in Germany
