Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. The first tube of the Detroit and Canada Tunnel has been sunk to a bed of mud 80 feet below the surface of the Detroit River. This tube is one of ten which will comprise the under-water portion of the US$25,000,000 tunnel project. The ten tubes vary in length from 220 to 250 feet, with an over-all diameter of 35 feet. Their aggregate length is approximately half a mile, constituting the underwater part of the tunnel. The tubes when launched weigh in the neighborhood of 500 tons each. At the time of sinking, each tube after being concreted weighs from 7000 to 8000 tons.
