Abstract :
Digital television is based on computationally intensive MPEG-2 audiovisual compression standard. Until recently MPEG-2 decompression required special hardware for standard TV resolution. New microprocessors with multimedia instructions enable decompression of MPEG-2 in software. We investigate software MPEG-2 decompression for HDTV. Processing requirements for HDTV are formulated. Results of experiments show that real time software decompression of HDTV is possible on multiprocessing machines. Microprocessors operating in gigahertz range will enable software decompression of HDTV on home PCs.
