Abstract :
In this paper a novel converter is presented to improve the excitation process in Switched Reluctance Generators (SRGs). This converter is accomplished through a singular scheme of flyback converter which first in an initial phase charge a dumping capacitor up to a high certain voltage and during the magnetizing period discharge this stored energy into machine´s coils. In this paper, the required analytical expressions for charging the capacitor and discharging into the machine are proved and the constraints for switching times are demonstrated in details. Since discharging of the capacitor into machine coils is under the natural frequency of the capacitor and variable inductance of the machine so its period will be a short certain time and relatively independent to rotor speed. As energy is extracted from excitation source in a longer duration in this converter, it is possible to employ a lower rated power supply. Through simulations of MATLAB/Simulink and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) the performance of the proposed converter is evaluated and is compared to conventional ones which show its exceptional supremacy considering excitation penalty.
