Abstract
The UK´s higher education funding bodies periodically carry out an assessment of the quality of research at British universities and higher education colleges. The results of the assessment enable approximately. £1 billion of public funds for research to be distributed selectively each year on the basis of quality. The most recent assessment was carried out in 2001 (the first was conducted in 1986) and this paper details the procedures followed by the Panel responsible for assessing the quality of electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) research
