Abstract :
Investigators at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center share a wonderful history of innovation in imaging science. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) combined to create MGH/HST. Just to cite a few highlights, it was at the Martinos Center, when it was known as the MGH Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Center, that physicist Ken Kwong pioneered the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study second-to-second brain activity. In addition, here the neuroscientist Jack Belliveau authored a famous study showing that the MRI signal changes as a flashing checkerboard goes on and off, the pioneering work that laid the groundwork of what would become known as functional MRI (fMRI).
