Abstract :
A recent, simple method for the calculation of optimum fibre lengths for erbium doped fibre amplifiers based on the Gaussian approximation is extended to arbitrary pump wavelengths. The effects of excited state absorption and pump-induced depletion of the metastable level are fully incorporated.
