Abstract
The process of pulse self-compression in an optical fiber is theoretically investigated on the basis of exact N -soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). It is shown that the degree of compression can be approximately N times higher than in the previously considered case of N /cosh-type initial conditions. The evolution of the spectra of N -soliton pulse is also considered
