An investigation into an optical mark reader

Examining boards and large institutes can afford to purchase optical mark readers to analyse and mark multiple-choice answer sheets, but is there a cheaper alternative to these expensive commercially produced devices? This was the problem that I decided to investigate for my Electronic Systems A-level project.
