Toward the end of a recent report from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) is a phrase that will give IT professionals pause for thought for the future: `The end of the IT department as we know it??. It??s not the headline finding: the main nub of the EIU??s `The Changing Role of IT in the Business?? is the expectation gap that is broadening between senior executives and the IT function. Whereas many IT practitioners retain a `strong belief in the primacy of IT??s cost-reduction role??, says the report, within three years a coalition of IT managers and board level executives expect IT??s primary role to shift to enabling revenue growth.
