Abstract
Patch antennas, being limited in bandwidth, are often modified to either be tunable or to yield extended instantaneous bandwidth. Presented is a fragmented patch antenna (FPA) that offers an easily manufactured solution. The FPA is a rectangular patch antenna divided into three sections with varactor diodes placed across the gaps between the sections. The three sections are designed to produce two tunable resonance frequencies that overlap, thereby creating a wide (63.4%) continuously tunable bandwidth.
