Abstract :
O/E-E/O conversion using an electro-absorption (EA) modulator is described from the viewpoint of noise transfer characteristics, where input optical signals are converted to electrical signals and the EA modulator is driven by the inversely amplified electrical signals. A threshold property in the EA modulation characteristic suppresses signal fluctuation in the input "on"-state, provided that the "on"-level voltage supplied to the modulator exceeds a threshold. Experiments in which amplifier ASE light was intentionally imposed on the signal light showed improvement in allowable ASE level, and confirmed the noise suppression effect.
