Abstract :
A far-infrared laser suitable for performing online and real-time inspection of high-voltage cable insulation at production rates is described. A fully automated laser instrument has been developed and installed at a cable factory for field evaluation. The system can detect defects as small as 50 μm in cable insulation at extrusion speeds up to 80 ft/min with a coverage greater than 95%.
