Abstract :
In many fields of work engineers have a ready-made theoretical framework which enables them to calculate the properties of new designs of electrical apparatus. With circuit-breakers, however, no adequate theory exists, and progress must be made largely by trial and error. Increasing cost makes the formulation of a basic theory of spark, glow and arc discharges eminently desirable, quite apart from academic satisfaction, and in this article the authors indicate the latest theoretical ideas. Part 2 of the article will be published in a later issue of the Journal. Dr. Edels is at the University of Liverpool and Dr. Crawford is with the Mining Research Establishment of the National Coal Board.
