Abstract :
On Saturday, February 9, 1985, preceding the Optical Fibers Conference in San Diego, there was a workshop sponsored by the LEOS Committee on Integrated Optics, organized by its members, Rod Alferness, Fred Leonberger, Bor Chen, and Elsa Garmire. An attempt was made to keep the workshop small but to have as much diversity as possible. The result was a dynamic discussion among the 66 participants from seven countries, representing 24 companies and eight universities. The workshop was divided into sections devoted to LiNb03 , III-V semiconductors, glass waveguides, and design/theory. It was specifically decided to exclude opto-electronics, both for lack of time and because of the topical meeting in March on the subject. The highlights of the workshop will be reviewed here.
