Abstract
Progress can be said to be the art of extracting further advantage from existing technology. To be really effective, progress comes from the recognition of the inherent characteristics in a design and their application to the problem in a manner that enhances the positive and minimises the negative. This concept can be seen in the development of variable-speed drives, and in particular in the area of small-power electrical machines
