Abstract
A major factor in the great success of Japanese manufacturing industry is the employment of large numbers of engineering and science graduates. In the last four years, the universities have turned out some 88 000 per year. Engineering and science graduates are regarded by manufacturing industry as being their most valuable industrial asset. They treat them and pay them accordingly
