Abstract :
Small projects and big ones are alike, except the decimal is in a different place. Here is an example of a small project of the author that involved a variety of engineering challenges, opportunities for energy conservation, and incorporated a renewable energy source. It is the story of the design of a reliable, energy-efficient, salmon hatchery built by a nonprofessional construction crew in a remote location, told from the viewpoint of the consulting engineer. This first hatchery with limited funding, critical time schedule, and more changes in scope than one should expect was built for Prince William Sound Aquaculture Corporation (PWSAC).
