Abstract
Using a time resolved Z-scan technique, the authors distinguished electronic (population lens) and thermal nonlinearities. The first measurements of the polarisability difference Δα between excited (4F3/2) and ground (4I9/2 ) states of Nd+3 ions in fluoride glasses are presented. A value of Δα≃1.6×10-26 cm 3 was obtained in fluorindate glass and Δα<0.2×10-26 cm3 was estimated for ZBLAN
