Abstract :
Distribution networks are facing significant technical constraints and uncertainties. Distribution network operators (DNOs) need to improve the quality of service, integrate high penetrations of distributed generation (or DG, which includes highly variable wind and solar generation), forecast energy flow, and improve efficiency, all while maintaining stable voltage at an acceptable level under all loading and operating conditions. These are major challenges that will be met by developing a network that is often referred to as an “active” distribution network. This article outlines the progress and plans for moving in this direction at ERDF, the French DNO.
