Abstract
An approximation is derived for the optimum M for M-out-of-N binary integration applied to Swerling II targets. This optimum M minimizes the required signal-to-noise ratio for given probabilities of detection and false alarm and a given N. The approximation is valid for probabilities of detection in the range of 0.1 to 0.95 and for typical probabilities of false alarm. Examples of the accuracy of this approximation are given.
