Abstract :
By ignoring the lessons of the past, we are falling into serious mistakes in our efforts to make arid lands productive. What is needed is a fundamental reappraisal of the best form the development of waterless regions can take¿the city in the desert may be much more viable in the long term than the agricultural community.
