Abstract
We consider the dynamic selection of lightpaths and optical fiber topology to minimize energy consumption in an optical transport network with renewable energy. We assess the performance and energy consumption profiles of networks that leverage energy storage in conjunction with renewable energy. We demonstrate that the use of energy storage decouples the network planning and traffic engineering problem from the renewable energy availability. This reduces path lengths, lightpath reconfigurations and the number of router ports required.
