Abstract
The article briefly describes the development of the first permanent electric street lights in 1879, which were based on arc lamps, in the Public Square of Cleveland. The arc lamps were powered by dynamos. The first lamps were placed on poles or in some cases were suspended on wires between buildings. Arc lamps were soon replaced by incandescent lamps
