Abstract :
Henry Alexander Mavor, Fel. A. I. E. E., a pioneer in electric lighting and electrical manufacturing in Great Britain, and one of the founders of the British firm of Mavor and Coulson, Ltd., died at Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland, July 16, 1915. Mr. Mavor´s work in the electric lighting field began in 1879, under the direction of Mr. R. E. Crompton. He installed the first electrical plant in Glasgow, from which the present municipal system has grown. Mr. Mavor first proposed for Glasgow a central power plant with high-tension transmission to substations. This idea did not meet with favor at the time, and a local plant was built. This has since been abandoned and Mr. Mavor´s original plan has been actually followed out. After the purchase of his Glasgow plant by the municipality, Mr. Mavor turned to the manufacture of electrical apparatus. He made many inventions relating to the electrical propulsion of ships, and carried out valuable experiments with a 2000-ton vessel. He was recently called into consultation in connection with the design of the electrically propelled United States naval collier Jupiter, and made two visits to this country on this work. Mr. Mavor was elected an Associate of the A. I. E. E. on December 18, 1903, and was transferred to the grade of Fellow December 12, 1913.
