As research engineers, our main job is to anticipate the needs of optical networks and fi nd the adequate response to them. Among these needs, there is, of course, the increase of total transmitted data. However, fi bre transmission becomes more and more challenging as bit rate increases because the tolerance to optical noise and propagation effects is reduced which limits the maximum transmission reach of optical systems.
