Abstract
The performance of operators and maintainers can be affected in a number of ways by the design and implementation of software-based systems. This article outlines relevant requirements within the IEC 61508 standard and the practical steps that can be taken to address human factors during the design process. Outstanding issues are also discussed that are currently being studied to provide relevant guidance.
