Abstract :
The AdCom meeting held recently in Rome during ISCAS 82 made two important decisions. The first pertains to the creation of two international vice-presidencies: one for Region 8 and one for Region 10. (Region 8 covers Europe, Africa, Middle East, and the USSR; Region 10 covers Japan, India, Southeast Asia, and Australia.) The lack of a definite administrative structure to coordinate various activities in these regions has long been a concern of our Society. These activities include membership development, university-industry liaison, conferences, lecture series, coloquia, and workshops. Many of us have felt that if we are to maintain our vitality as a technical society, a fuller participation in the decision making process of the Society by our members residing in these regions, particularly within the AdCom, is a necessity. It was therefore gratifying to see that this proposal received overwhelming support within the AdCom. That this historical step was taken at an AdCom meeting held outside North America was of special symbolic significance. According to the new administrative structure, the two international vice-presidents will receive funds allocated specifically for the support of their work. The professional activities in Regions 1 through 7, as well as those in Region 9, will continue to fall under the realm of the present vice-president, who will then become the Society´s executive vice-president, and to whom the two international vice-presidents will report. The term for these three positions will be two years.
