Abstract :
THE IEEE CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS SOCIETY began as The Institute of Radio Engineers´ Circuit Theory Group in 1949. Twenty-six IRE members signed a petition dated March 22, which was approved by the Board on April 5, 1949. When the IRE merged with the AIEE, there was also a Committee on Electronic Circuits and Systems within the AIEE. At the time of the merger, the AIEE committee joined the IRE group to become the Professional Technical Group on Circuit Theory of the new IEEE. The official merger agreement between the two parties was dated April 3, 1964. The final revised agreement was approved on December 16, 1964, with the merger to take effect on January 1, 1965. In December 1971, the Circuit Theory Group petitioned for Society status and to call itself the Circuits and Systems Society. This operation took place as a two-step process. The petition to change to Society status was approved by the IEEE Board of Directors in May 1972. At that time, it became the IEEE Circuit Theory Society. Then, in December 1972, the Board approved the name change to the present IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.
