Abstract
A novel fringe-counting fibre optic sensor is proposed. It consists of a Vernier-type optical fibre resonator, and is driven by a source that covers one or several free spectral ranges of the Vernier resonator. Such a source can be synthesised by scanning a single-mode laser. The resolution of the sensor can be a small fraction of a wavelength. Fibre optic Vernier resonators can be constructed in several ways. A design using two cascaded fibre Fabry-Perot resonators is analysed in detail. An equivalent design consisting of two recirculating ring resonators is suggested as an improved solution
