Abstract
Using a new expression for the noise variance of optically amplified systems it is shown that the theoretical SNR degradation caused by uncontrolled polarisation at the input to optically preamplified receivers is minimal for gain sensitivities less than 4 dB. This result is experimentally confirmed.
