    It could go down in technical history books as the Year of Pessimism. Many people in the world saw technology in 1979 as a demon rather than a useful genie to mankind. From the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island to scarce energy supplies and fear of a falling Skylab, the public perception of technology was gloomy.
