A new equation for the static characteristic of the normal electric arc

COMMERCIALLY the electric arc is now extensively used, and yet after more than a hundred years of study, there has been little crystallization of opinion as to certain phases of its fundamental theory. Absolute contradictions are frequently found in the literature, and premature generalizations have given rise to more disagreement among the investigators of the equation of the static characteristic of the normal¹ arc than the experimental difficulties warrant.
