When very-large-scale integration becomes a commercial reality, the chips will be used first as custom circuits in at least four application areas: medical electronics, telecommunications for the office and elsewhere, personal intelligent terminals, and scientific computers. Manufacturers in these industries have finally started to define what functions should be integrated on single monoliths.
