Abstract
The Leisure and Learning Technology Foresight Panel of the UK´s Technology Foresight Programme have concluded that the convergence of information technology, electronics and communications has within it the potential to produce major and revolutionary wealth creation and quality of life benefits in the spheres of ´leisure and learning´. However, convergence also raises the prospect of serious and fundamental damage to the UK, its businesses, institutions and people, unless a well-articulated strategy and action plan is in place to address the opportunities and threats. The new technologies of the Information Age are available to any country in the world and this article discusses the emerging role for the computer systems professional in ensuring that the UK achieves clear, long-term and sustainable competitive advantage.
