Abstract
A comprehensive theoretical analysis, using a highly accurate model, is performed on the design of erbium doped fibres. The analysis includes a comparison of the 980 nm and the 1480 nm pump bands. The choice of index raising codopant is shown to be very significant, when pumping at 980 nm.
