Abstract
In this tutorial paper, the nature of advanced intelligent networks (AINs) is defined. Examples of the types of telecommunication services which can be introduced with AINs are given. The reasons for deploying this architectural change, as well as the issues which arise in a telephone administration because of its implementation, are discussed. Major components of an AIN architecture, for which standards are now being developed, are explained.
