The information needs of journal users are normally complex. They need specific, discipline-oriented information and also more general, mission-oriented information. The journals are expected to provide items required for current awareness as well as data of an archival nature. As a consequence, decisions concerning the subject coverage, formats, and packaging of journals are also complex, particularly in view of the impact of these decisions on the economics of journal publication.
