Abstract :
A thin silica rod is pressed piezoelectrically against the face of a side-polished fibre. In the contact region a local waveguide is induced elasto-optically in close proximity to the fibre core. Coupling to that waveguide attenuates the guided optical power by up to 6 dB. The observed modulation response is flat up to ~12 kHz
