Abstract :
It has been traditional in explaining the energy band theory of solids to use a delta-function approximation due to Kronig and Penney. With the advent of the microcomputer age, it is argued here that numerical treatments of band structure are easy to do and physically far more correct. The Kronig-Penney approximation should now be regarded as obsolete.
