Modern control theory¿is there a use for it?

A brief glance at any of the major journals dealing with the topic of modern control theory will reveal that researchers in this area are producing a great deal of elegant mathematics. However, the question which constantly comes to mind is `does this work have any relevance to the everyday problems associated with the control of real physical systems?¿ The answer to this question, like so many others, is both yes and no
