Abstract
The number of simultaneous telephone calls that can be made across the Atlantic by satellite has increased from 240 in 1965 to several thousand; this is one result of the rapid development of satellite communication since 1962, when the first transatlantic television transmissions were made via TELSTAR. The article describes the beginnings of satellite communication, the present state of the art and possible future trends
