Abstract :
A linear optimal controller is designed to implement multiple variable series compensations in transmission networks of interconnected power systems. The proposed controller is utilised to damp interarea oscillations and enhance power system damping. The effectiveness of the linear optimal controller to properly control such multiple variable series reactances is demonstrated through digital simulation studies on a nine-bus power system with three generators and three loads buses. The digital simulation studies are conducted using a PSCAD/EMTDC software package. The simulation results show that the controller contributes significantly to the damping of interarea oscillations and the enhancement of power system damping
