There used to be a pleasant custom for older people to pass on advice to the young. The process has stopped now, of course, and in many ways it has been reversed. However, although the author of this article is at least 20 years too old to be taken seriously, he hopes that some readers will benefit from his reflections on those uncomfortable encounters during which the courses of careers are decided.
